Myspace and Toyota Launch “ROCK THE SPACE” Competition For Unsigned Artists To Win A Record Deal

MySpace the world’s premiere social portal, in partnership with MySpace Records and Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc., today announced the official launch of Rock the Space, an exclusive competition encouraging unsigned bands or solo artists to submit an original song for the opportunity to score a recording contract with MySpace Records, the company’s full-service independent label. Beginning today through July 1, 2009, aspiring artists across the country can enter to win the chance of a lifetime by visiting Toyota’s MySpace Music profile for submission details and contest rules

“MySpace’s origins are in connecting new and emerging artists with music fans. We designed the Rock the Space competition to take that idea to new heights,” said Kim McCullough, Corporate Manager, Marketing Communications, TMS. “Toyota is thrilled to bring unsigned musicians and the MySpace community this unprecedented opportunity.”

To enter the Rock the Space competition artists must submit an original mp3 demo. All entrants will have the opportunity to create a viral music widget with an easy embed code to help them spread their music across MySpace and the web. MySpace users can share in the experience by adding the music widgets to their profiles and posting comments on the Toyota Music profile.

In July, MySpace Records will select five finalists who will be featured prominently on the Toyota Music profile and the MySpace community will vote to select the winner. The five finalists will receive a media allocation to promote themselves with My Ads targeted advertising throughout MySpace.

“Rock the Space allows the MySpace Music platform to do what it does best – enable new music and new artists to be discovered,” said Jeff Berman, President of Sales and Marketing for MySpace. “MySpace is excited to offer these artists a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and to take part in their journey from the very first step.”

The Rock the Space winner will be announced in September and will receive a recording contract as well as a $10,000 musical instrument prize package provided by Fender, the world’s leading guitar manufacturer. The winner’s song will also be available for download on the MySpace Music Home Page. The four runners-up win a MySpace Records Development Deal friends package.

“Rock the Space will create an organic and loyal fan base with a vested interest in these artists and their careers by allowing users to participate in the process from the beginning,” said J. Scavo, GM of MySpace Records. “This interactivity between artist and fan has always been a fundamental and differentiating factor for the MySpace Music platform and has led to the success of many of today’s most popular artists.”

Public apology by Donn Hupp

This is an exclusive public statement provided to from Donn Hupp.

I apologize to the fans of our local music community. Even more so to the local songwriters and musicians who have been inspired, encouraged, now disappointed, and perhaps confused. What has been kept dark has been now brought to light. I admit a long-lived compulsion that got out of hand. I am thankful for my friends and regret the position which I placed so many. I am also thankful to those who have expressed themselves anonymously on the issue of infringement. Most of all, I am thankful for my beautiful wife and family who love me beyond mistakes.

I did record and perform previously published works without permission and without due credit to songwriters, artists, record and publishing companies.

It is my sole responsibility for notification and restitution. None of the singers, musicians, and artists who either played in studio or performed publicly had knowledge of any possible copyright infringement or plagiarism.

The responsibility is my burden alone. I am unpublished, under no representation, or associated with any performance organization.

In the summer of 2002, six songs were recorded in studio, add one previously recorded live track, for a self titled cd. Two of the tracks, “She Went To Denver” and “Turpentine” are my complete original work. No songwriter/publishing credits were given, not even my own. The cd was made available at time of performance only. Through 2005 no more than five hundred homemade units were printed. Some were sold. Some were given away. Some unusable after Hurricane Katrina. Exact numbers are unavailable. There have been no more printed or available since. With few exceptions, the local venues I performed these songs and others did participate in public performance licensing agreements with no proper credit from myself. During this time, playing music locally was my only income and financially “just getting by”.

Again, my deepest apologies to those who have been affected by this sudden turmoil in our community.

My hope is proactive and forward.

Green Day and The Bravery coming to New Orleans

The Bravery will be supporting Green Day on their summer tour. New Orleans just happens to be one of their stops. They will be at the New Orleans arena August 7th. This is exciting and thrilling.

The band has not performed a full show in New Orleans as Green Day since the ’04 Voodoo Experience in City Park. But they joined U2 for the grand reopening of the Superdome in September 2006.

Hopefully I’ll see you there.

Who wants to open for Aerosmith?

AEROSMITH’s official fan club, AeroForceOne, has issued the following update:

“Rock icons AEROSMITH with special guest ZZ TOP are gonna wreak rock ‘n’ roll havoc this summer on a massive U.S. tour! And you could be the opening act. Time to put your Guitar Hero skill to the ultimate test. This isn’t your living room couch — it’s the real deal! Two worthy fans will perform playing Guitar Hero: Aerosmith on stage as the opening act before the show roars onto the stage — one winner from online and one from radio will be chosen in each city. If that taste of rock stardom weren’t reward enough, the winner from each city also wins two tickets to the show, a Guitar Hero: Aerosmith game pack, and a personal congrats from Steven Tyler and Joe Perry before the show! (For the winner only, not their guest)

“Your moment of rock glory will be captured on video and posted to and the AEROSMITH YouTube channel — let your friends try to top that!”
